Hints & Myths about Argentine Tango

PREVIOUS

Buenos Aires

Julio Balmaceda and Corina de la Rosa arrived one afternoon to give us a short vals lesson. Some of their tips are noted below.

General:

  walk from hip

each foot set down heavily, lifted lightly

walk forward displaced, squaring before cross

four steps / three beats - slow slow quick quick - with quick quick on 3,1 or 2,3

We did a few practice block:

walk in parallel on the open side of your follower

walk forward a few steps onto leader's right foot

step around follower onto leader's left foot

walk backwards for a few steps onto leader's right foot

step around follower onto leader's left foot

walk to the side and repeat above

... then learned hot to copy Julio and Corina's "cradle":

Leader steps back on right leg, follower forward on her left leg

Leader sweeps left leg, turning to his left, bringing follower into back step around him

Leader moves left foot against follower's trailing right foot and she crosses right in front of left foot

Right rotate to rock back onto right

Left rotate back to close on Right

Right rotate

Left rotate forward

How it started
What you must do first
Getting around
Intertwining those legs
Having real fun
Swirling around the room
No limits
